i remember getting the transmogrifier somewhere else (it was a link from this site) transmogrifier lets you clone original Maxis items to create your own objects. then you export the sprites to a photoshop like Adobe (I use hp, because i don't understand Adobe) you can recolor, resize, and re-shape the items in photoshop. then you import it back and edit the name, price and description. i would rate my skills on T-mog a 4, because i have (very) basic understanding of it. i can only re-color, which is the easiest, and edit the description. you can find tutorials for it all over the place.

OK, I'd suggest you do two things:
1) go to
http://thesimstransmogrifier.com and get T-Mog version 2.
2) Go to a site like
http://www.simgypsy.com and download the bases for simple objects like counters, beds etc.
Then practise changing colours by cloning objects in T-Mog and opening the graphics in a decent paint package. Then, when you've got the hang of it, you can start to use the base objects from SimGypsy to paint your own details onto them.
Hope this helps :o)
