While trying to install Makin' Magic (all other exp packs installed in order) It goes along fine until it gets to the second disc where it says "Now patching previous version of the sims," where it freezes.

I was having this same problem. I even reinstalled all my Sims expansion packs. After installing it a third time, I decided to wait while it said "patching previous version" and it worked. I had to wait about 15 minutes, but it does keep going. So, my advise to you is to wait for a loooong time!
