Do you need the origanl sims to play the sims online or is it a stand alone???

Yup. You need the original to play the sims online. i've seen packs in Target stores that include The Sims(original) Sim City, The Sims Online, and Sim City 3000, so if you're intrested in getting those, you could save money with one of those packs.
