Yes and you can also have family reunions, according to a screenshot posted a while back.

You cannot go to other people's homes. However, you can have them come to yours. You can also go to community lots, like in some Sims 1 expansion packs.

you can invite families over as "a household" also throw party and have outing groups in community lots or at home
