As I have never played Sims, and have ordered Sims 2, do I need to read a book to know how to play the game, or will the manual provided will be enough?

The manual will be sufficient to get started but ultimately the best way to learn is to just jump in and start clicking about, then come to this site and swot up in the Knowledge Base.

Of course, you could go to other sites but I'm biased :)

Just do the tutorials. It's quite easy to learn how to play the game. You could read the manual if you're bored, but it's not really necessary. If you hover your mouse cursor over an option, it will automatically tell you what that option means.

I bought the strategy book and it does have a lot of useful info not in the guide. It tells which horoscope sign gets along or doesn't get along with which others. It tells about the different aspiratons and what the person will want, need or fear with an aspiration. There is a lot of good info. I would recommed it. You won't need any new books for the expansion packs even though they come out.
