do your kids grow older then kids can they grow up into teenagers and stuff?

Not in the original game, no. The first game has only three life stages: Baby, Kid, Adult.

You can download a patch for that kind of stuff, but you wouldn't want your sim dead, would you?And, unfortunatley teenagers look awful.

The patch of which you speak does work but often causes more trouble than it's worth especially as far as teens go.

Makin' Magic has a kids only charm that forces said kid to grow up to adult, however it's a one way journey.
