I think it just depends on the number of neat points in their personality. Buying a cleaning bot and having a maid helps though.

Nah just to show you most sims are sloppy like us in real life! If their neat points are high then they will never drop trash and best of all if my sims guest have high neat point she or he clears away dirty dishes for me too :)

Hi , thanks for the replies. I did find a trash can to buy and put it intothe kitchen area. The Sims still put garbage on the floor but if I click on the trash and select "clean up" the Sim puts the trash into the small trash can in the kitchen instead of going all the way out to the street trash can.
The small can does have to be emptied about every 4-5 times, it fills up quickly but this does save some trips outside.

Even better than the small blue trash can, is the trash compactor. It looks much like the dishwasher, but it holds a lot more trash than the small blue can. The maid usually empties it for me as well, so I almost never make the trip out to the main garbage can. :)

Even better than trash cans or trash compactor, which is great btw, is the handy-dandy move objects cheat. Just go into build or buy mode, hit ctrl-shift-c, type move_objects on<enter>, then pick up the offending item and delete it. This works on everything including nasty visitors.
