Game won't load! When I start it up, it shows the little white screen with the Sims 2, but it doesn't start! How can I fix this?

The same happened to me when i bought the sims2 university and if i leave it about 15mins it says something like sims2 caused an error and will now close. The sims2 ran fine without the expansion pack. i really want to be able to play the sims again can someone please help?
