What files have to go where?

Are you talking about installing downloads?
If so all files go in mydocuments/eagames/sims2/downloads
You can make Sub folders in the Downloads folder for floors walls objects and hacks BUT the skins and anything Sim related like genetics etc MUST be directly in the downloads folder
the only things that go in other folders are terrains and collections
they go in the collections folder and terrains folder
