after creating a family, is there a way to go back and edit it?

Once the family is "created" and shows up in the neighborhood, there is no "easy" way to return and edit the family or the Sims in the family.

There is a program called "SimPE" that will let you edit sims that already exist in game, but it's fairly complicated to use.
