Do you have to go to work? Can you use Rosebud instead?

Just like in TS1 you don't need to work, but it is the best way to make money for your families. Careers also bring new opportunities and objects to your sims, but getting a job is not required.

Their will be cheat codes, similar to rosebud in TS1, but at this point (before the game's release) we don't know what the exact codes will be.

Once the cheat codes are known you'll find them on this site (as well as on many others). Just wait and see...

I think that getting a job will affect that lifeline(?) and visa-versa, so getting a job might really help game play.

Yeah. I think Kelly is right. Getting a job will most likely affect the things your sims will be able to do. Still, the cheat codes don't hurt. ^.^
