I also have Windows XP and I've not had any problems installing and playing the sims and the expansion packs, so I'm not really sure what the problem could be, but I know that the software is compatible. I have had some conflicts with other software that is supposed to be compatible with windows XP which I was able to resolve by downloading updates from Microsoft, try that and see if it helps any.

Maybe here's another reason: The two computers that I have, operate at resolutions of 1280x1024 and 1400x1250. It seems unlikely, because I changed the resolution to 1024x768, and tried it with no luck. I got the updates from Microsft, and that didn't fix it.

Hmmm.... I operate the sims at the 800x600 (I think) screen resolution, but I don't that would interfer with it that much.
I don't know exactly what problem (installing or playing) you're having with it, but according to the sims website these could be some factors giving you trouble:
Anti-virus software (should be disabled)
background tasks (should be stopped)
It also suggests unchecking the DMA box on the cd-rom.
Complete steps for that can be found in the help section of the sims website under Installation, "My computer locks up, freezes, or crashes during installation, etc."
I hope this helps! If not you may what to use the contact support section from the website.
