If you get tired of your dragon you can let him leave your house. You can buy a new one after all. Maybe this will help: at http://sims.kelsha.net under 'Objects'-->'Buyable' you can download buyable dragons and toys and at http://www.c-and-c-enterprises.com under 'Regular Simmies' you can download the treats for your dragon. The color and personality of your dragon depends on how much attention you give to the egg. I hope this will help you a little =).
